This website began with a research programme between 2013-2016, ‘The Needs and Experiences of ‘New Migrants’ in the North East Workforce’, which was funded by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust (grant ref SG132753), Northumbria University and Nottingham Trent University. The project team comprised Tom Vickers (Nottingham Trent University), John Clayton, Hilary Davison, Lucinda Hudson, Maria Aurora Cañadas Romero, Paul Biddle, Sara Lilley (all Northumbria University), Georgina Fletcher (Regional Refugee Forum North East) and Michal Chantkowski (International Community Organisation of Sunderland), and additional work was done in preparing material for the website by Katherine Brownlow (Nottingham Trent University). Thanks are due to all of the participants in the research and to the many organisations that helped us to find respondents. All names of individuals who participated in the research have been changed to protect anonymity.
The purpose of this website is to provide a platform for our research findings, including case studies and other material that didn’t fit into other publications, with the aim of making these materials available for educators, students and the public to increase understanding of migrants’ working lives. We also welcome submissions from other research projects and from individuals and community organisations, in the hope that this website can act as a living resource to document the experiences, struggles, achievements and victories of people who cross international borders.
